First Grade Drama Objectives

Drama Objectives Alignment to National Standards

These objectives cover essential learning in the art form for five- to seven-year-old students.   This first PDF download above contains objectives used in our First Grade Curriculum (also listed below) in a handy printout for reference.  We have aligned the objectives with the United States National Standards as shown in the second PDF.

Additionally, we have mapped the National Core Arts Standards to grade-appropriate theater standards in a handy reference document for each grade level.  Use this reference if you are customizing your curriculum.

The recommended Drama Objectives delivery order:

  1. Name the four fine arts.

  2. Demonstrate how concentration, imagination, transformation, and imitation (C.I.T.I.) are used in drama.

  3. Use collaboration and cooperation skills:

    • a)  Work in personal, partner, and small group space without bothering others.
    • b)  Follow the directions of the drama leader.
    • c)  Refrain from distracting others.
    • d)  Provide possible solutions to problems faced while trying to create a drama.
    • e)  Sit in a circle to plan; stand to practice when preparing a drama.
    • f)  Ask rather than tell when deciding roles with others.

  4. Demonstrate how the drama tools create and communicate character actions and objects in a setting (e.g., non-locomotor movement, body objects, sound effects, etc.).

  5. Use audience behaviors that support live presentations.

  6. Respond to the work of classmates and/or self by:

    • a)  Withholding comments until work by others is completed.
    • b)  Mentioning personal skills that could be improved.
    • c)  Using the names of other classmates only in praise.

  7. Identify the story elements of character, plot (beginning, middle, end), problem (conflict), setting, and message.

  8. Demonstrate how the body and voice are used to communicate a story.

  9. Identify and imitate simple emotions.

  10. Compare the actions of a character to real-life behaviors.
